Founded in 1920, Russo's Grill has a rich legacy, heavily intertwined with the legacy of its birthplace, Amsterdam, New York. In the late 1800s, fueled by the opening of the Erie Canal and the Utica and Schenectady railroads, Amsterdam had been well on its way to becoming a manufacturing and textile giant. It was several years later, at the height of this epoch, that John Russo left his native Sicily and arrived here with the hope of bringing a little piece of Italy along with him. In 1920, he realized this dream when he opened Russo's Bar and Grill, a small family restaurant located right across from the Mohawk River.
As the years went on and the many textile companies eventually relocated, Amsterdam became simply another quiet, once-bustling Upstate New York town. But both John's restaurant (now a local landmark) and his culinary vision have continued to flourish.
Generations of Russo chefs have been working on tweaking and perfecting the recipes for many of our dishes on this menu since the restaurant's inception; essentially, they've been in the works for nearly a hundred years. |

Today, John's grandson Michael has taken on the responsibility of continuing this legacy. Having picked up his first frying pan before most children learn how to ride a bicycle, Michael has been in the restaurant business for quite literally his entire life - and now, armed with well over 30 years of formal experience and an education from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, he offers to you his own polished versions of those original Sicilian home style recipes that made Russo's Grill a local legend. |
